How to Choose a Program

Online MS degrees in cyber security pose a challenge. On the one hand, they’re often designed for working IT professionals, with flexible schedules and lots of electives. On the other hand, if online programs are not designed and planned properly, they can be a complete waste of your time and money. Here’s how to choose with care:

  • Make sure you fit the cybersecurity program’s profile. Strong online MS programs often require students to have a solid core in IT, a healthy GPA, and a few years of job experience. That’s good. It means that the school is taking distance learning seriously.
  • Seek out savvy professors in your field of interest. For the price you're paying, you deserve mentors with significant experience in the private sector and/or government who also know how to teach. Research their LinkedIn profiles. Do a background check.
  • Request a course demo. Your program should give you constant access to your teachers and lots of opportunities to communicate & connect with other students. After all, these people will be your future business contacts.
  • Decide whether you’re interested in cyber security research or not. Like their campus counterparts, online MS degrees often give master’s students the option to choose a thesis or a practicum/capstone project. Choose a program that suits your professional goals.
  • Consider reviews & rankings. U.S. News & World Report has rankings for Best Graduate Programs in Computer Science and Best Online Graduate Computer IT Programs andQuora users frequently have opinions about online offerings. You can also contact alumni through LinkedIn. And don't forget to read our own rankings of the top schools with online Master's in Cybersecurity programs.
  • Learn whether your school is designated CAE IA/CD. It’s not necessary to go to a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cybersecurity school in order to get a good education, but you may find the designation helpful in winnowing down your choices.

What to Look For in an Online MS in Cyber Security

An online MS in cyber security may be the final qualification on your résumé, so it’s important to get the most out of the experience. Along with a schedule that fits your timetable, you might wish to consider:

  • Virtual Reality: The best online MS programs will find ways to mimic real-world scenarios (e.g. cyber labs where hacker attacks can be simulated) on any kind of scale (e.g. war games in a virtual system infrastructure). Ask alumni what they thought of the experience.
  • Research Strengths: If you’re interested in specific electives (e.g. digital forensics), find out what kind of cyber security work is going on in the school’s research centers. Do online students have an opportunity to participate in those initiatives?
  • Certifications: Does the program train you for mid-career professional certifications (e.g. CISSP)?
  • Portfolio: Employers are looking for practical skills. Is there a capstone project? Will you have the chance to create a professional portfolio?
  • Networking: Distance learning doesn’t have to be isolating. Some schools arrange local internships for online students and offer them funding to attend conferences and meetings.
  • Employment: Solid cyber security programs often have recruiting ties to employers in their area (e.g. Florida & NASA; California & Silicon Valley; Washington D.C. & CIA, etc.). How does your degree connect its online students to job opportunities with these employers? What is the job placement rate for graduates?
